- Nikkie, 21, says people often question whether it's really her in her YouTube tutorials when they see her without make-up

A
make-up artist who claims that people are shocked to see her with and
without make-up has set out to show others just how much of a difference
cosmetics can make.
Nikkie, 21, who is originally from the Netherlands, has earned internet fame with her Nikkie Tutorials YouTube
channel, which has nearly one million subscribers. But when the make-up
artist is fresh-faced with her hair back in a bun, she admits she has
trouble convincing people it's really her in her videos.
So
in one recent clip, Nikkie decided to make just one side of her face
totally glamorous, while leaving the other side make-up free.

Regular
girl: Before putting on make-up, Nikkie looks like the girl next door;
she says that people who compare her natural face to the one in her
videos often don't believe they are seeing the same person
'I've
been noticing a lot lately that girls have been almost ashamed to say
that they love make-up, 'cause nowadays, [if] you say that you love
make-up, you either do it because you want to look good for boys, you do
it because you're insecure, or you do it because you don't love
yourself,' she says at the beginning of the video.
But Nikkie adds
that there's no shame in being a beauty junkie, saying that it can be
fun to change up your look - or, in this case, half of your look.
Inspired by an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race, the Dutch beauty guru explains
that she is going to 'do half my face full-on glam - I'm truly gonna
transform one side of my face - and the other side is going to be me'.
She
adds that she hopes it will put an end to the awkward situation she
often encounters when she meets people while not in full make-up; when
Nikkie shows new acquaintances her YouTube videos, they tell her 'that
is not you' and claim that she doesn't look anything like the glamorous
girl who features in the clips and on her Instagram account.

Tools ready, Nikkie gets to work. She starts with Ko Gen Do Aqua foundation, which she brushes over the right side of her face.
'It makes me look Photoshopped without Photoshop. That's why I love it,' she says.
Pulling out the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, she adds: 'I have dark circles. I want them to be gone.'
The make-up she uses isn't just to smooth her complexion, however.
Her
face primed, Nikkie moves up to her eyes, explaining: 'I love brows.
Problem is, I don't have them naturally. What is the solution for that?
Brow pencil.'

She then takes out her first pot of eyeshadow, describing how the pigmented product does more than just add color.
'I don't like how my eyes are hooded - slightly on the smaller side and not as open and awake and fresh,' she says.
'So
I like to take a brown eyeshadow and start building it in my crease.
And most of the days, I don't even follow my natural crease. I just go a
little bit above it and create this new shape, so I can create this eye
shape, or the effect that I want my eye to give by using make-up.'
For
a splash of color, Nikkie says that shades of gold and taupe are her
favorites, so she adds Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyeshadow in Fawn and
Cognac to her lids using her finger.
'I
love optically making my eyes look larger, so for this [next step] I'm
taking my Kat von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper and creating a new inner
corner,' she continues.
Sticking to staples: Her favorite eyeshadow colors are shades of gold and taupe, which she uses in the video
Pretty pout: Because lip liner adds more definition to her mouth, she uses it before adding lipstick or gloss
She
then creates a parallel line underneath her lower lid and leaves the
space between that and her true lid bare, creating the illusion that her
eyes are bigger than they are.
Then,
using eye shadow and a brush, she 'smokes out' her lower lash line and
sprinkles a dab of Makeup Studio Jewel Effects to just below the corners
of her eyes to add some shimmer.
Just
over half way through her transformation, Nikkie already looks
dramatically different. One side of her face is even-toned, while the
other is reddish and uneven. One eye looks wide and sensual, while the
other looks more tired. And one brow is full, while the other is sparse.
But she's not done yet.
'If
there's one thing that completely changes up my eyes, it's eyeliner,'
she says, swiping on NYC Liquid Liner before applying false eye lashes
with a tweezer.
Now
that her eyes are complete, Nikkie moves back to her face, explaining:
'One of the main things I get told when I show people pictures of myself
in make-up, like in my videos, and when I'm in front of them, in person
- they always say: "But you look so much slimmer!" 'Let me introduce
you to the world of contouring.'

She
expertly dusts brown powder below her cheekbone to create depth. She
then brushes on bronzer, 'because it gives me the sun without the
damage', swipes on pink blush, and tops it all off with luminizer.
For
the final step, Nikkie moves down to her lips. She explains that she
likes to line them to 'give the shape of my lips a little bit more
volume'.
She
finishes them off with Dose of Colors lipstick in Soft Touch and and
Rimmel Apocalips Lipgloss in Phenomenon, creating a pink, glossy effect.
Finally,
she can show off her transformation, which she does by covering each
side of her face in turn to give viewers the full effect.
'And
that, guys, is the power of make-up,' she concludes. 'I just want
people to know that make-up is fun and there are no rules to make-up.'
